I am often asked by candidates seeking employment how they can change careers from one industry to the next. Over and over, I see the same roadblock hitting them. SOFTWARE GAP!
What is a software gap?
A software gap happens very often when someone has been working in an industry that uses their own proprietary software or industry software. If the company you work for is not using one of the most commonly used software, Microsoft Suite, you are going to be at a disadvantage as you look for a new job. Most employers use MS Suite products and often will test for competence on this software. Also, many newer software designers use the outline or framework of Microsoft, because it is assumed that an employee will pick up on the program more quickly since things feel familiar with what they should already know.
How can I knock this roadblock down?
LinkedIn has Microsoft Office tutorials. Also, most local libraries have free classes on MS Suite. Reach out to your local library or workforce center to see if they are offering free classes in Word and Excel and sign up!
Won’t I get on the job training?
Never assume that you will get the training you lack. Most employers are already short staffed and struggle to offer the training you may require. It is better to only need training to learn the nuance of your job and tasks, rather than software on top of the duties you will perform.
Don’t make excuses not to learn and grow your skills!
I have worked with staff that are 80+ who know more about software than staff in their 20’s. It is always a pleasure to work with someone who loves to learn and is always moving forward in their skills and abilities. I have helped many people find a new career because they pushed themselves to learn, they did the work of being ready to hit the ground running. These hard-working people are my favorite kind of people to work with and one of the main reasons why I love what I do.
